Beginners guide on creating a simple Facebook profile picture frame using Photoshop

Facebook has added a unique feature to its website. This feature lets its user create a profile picture frame which can be used to decorate the profile picture as well as the Facebook live videos. Generally, Facebook frames are created to show support towards typical sports, persons or anything legal activities. Anyone who uses Facebook can create and upload frames to Facebook.

Certainly, designing and creating Facebook frame is not too difficult for designers and graphics artists but it may be slightly difficult for someone who is new to designing and Photoshop. If you are desirous of creating a complex and stunning frame, you are required to have complex knowledge as well. However, creating simple frames without too much graphics is absolutely easy and fast. You can design and create a Facebook profile picture frame in just two minutes.

The plenty of apps available in Play store/App store are also capable of creating frames (may be more standard frame than the frame which is going to be created below) on mobile devices. In the case of desktop/laptops, it can be easily accomplished with a dominant photo editing software, the Photoshop. Photoshop can handle every simple to complex type editing. The latest version of Photoshop is Photoshop CC but I am demonstrating you this process with a quite old version of Photoshop, Photoshop CS6. The process is same for all the previous and latest versions. The process demonstrated below is to create a simple profile picture frame for Facebook and intended for Photoshop beginners.

Without further ado, I would like to move to the topic. Here, I am creating a simple frame which will be overlapping at the bottom of the Facebook profile picture. This frame includes a colored rectangle with a sample text over it. I have taken "Happy Friday" as a sample text. This Process may seem long and techy but actually, it is not. First of all, make sure your computer is turned on. Now I assume Photoshop (Any versions) is opened on your computer.

Steps

Step 1: Go to Menu bar and select File at the top. Now select 'New' from the drop-down menu.

Step 2: A new Dialog box appears on the screen. It's time to insert size of the frame. The Facebook profile picture is a square with a dimension of 500×500 or 600×600 pixel or whatever. Higher dimension produces a higher quality image so inserting 900×900 pixel would be better. Insert 900 pixel as both width and height. This dimension may not be effective with landscape mode, you can try new one by changing the dimension after knowing the method. Set background as white so it will be easier to proceed. But at last, background must be removed. If not removed, the whole white background will cover the profile picture and frame itself acts as a clean profile picture, Not?

Step 3: Now you have a white square in working area and a locked background layer on panel column. Now choose rectangle tool from the toolbar.

Mark style to none from Panel column (Left side of the screen), if you want some effect then you can select one.

Drag a rectangle path at anywhere inside the working area. Be sure, a rectangle is of full width and of small height so as to cover a small portion of profile picture. Now, you can see a new shape layer added in the layer window.

Step 4: Now it is time to add some color to the rectangle. Right click on just created shape layer from column panel at right and select rasterize layer. Then, with the shape layer selected, select a color from the top of the Photoshop interface as shown in the screenshot below. Here, I am selecting the blue color.

Step 5: Now, drag the rectangle to the base of the square with the CTRL + click on the rectangle, so that it doesn't leave any blank space on both sides and below.

Step 6: If you want to insert glow effect, you can go through Blending option. If shadow/glow effect is clearly used, the frame seems to be floated on profile pic or it can also be used to create simple 3D structure. Blending option can be reached by right-clicking the rectangle which was just created or by right-clicking shape layer. I'm using simple inner glow here. You can customize it according to your desire.

Step 7: The process remained is adding text to the rectangle. For this, Select type tool [Horizontal] from the toolbar. Assign the value of text size and assign the suitable color of the text from the top of the window, so that it is clearly visible on your background. Select suitable font which fits your style.

Step 8: Write your desired word within the rectangle or anywhere inside working area. We can drag the text to the required place later. I've taken 'Happy Friday' as a text using 'Magento' font, you can select any fonts that suits the frame.  Now a new text layer is added by Photoshop.

Step 9: Drag the text to suitable place inside the rectangle. Height, width or simply size of the font can be changed with (Ctrl + Mouse).

Step 10: The second last and most important thing to do is to remove the white background. This can be done in many ways such as with pen tool, lasso tool and with background removal tool. But the easiest method to do this is just hiding the background layer from layer window. For this, go to layer window. You can see three layers which were just created. Out of them, the lowermost layer is background layer, as the name itself indicates. To hide this layer, just unmark the 'small eye' ticker located beside the layer name. Finally, the background is removed and a frame is perfectly created within Photoshop.

Step 11: Finally, work remained is to save frame in JPEG or PNG format. Go to File>Save As. Give appropriate file name and select JPEG or PNG as a file format from the drop-down. Give file path and finally save. Now a simple profile picture frame is created.
