Pixabay Review: Get free images for your blog or website

Royalty free images, Pixabay review
The role of an image in website and blog development is incalculable. That is because, images are not only the catalyst to attract and keep visitors, but are also advantageous in blog/website SEO.

But the problem originates in their availability. Getting relevant images for your content is a painful job unless you are a photographer or related-field professional.

Downloading images from external websites and reusing it on public display is an easy task, but this is an illegal approach and a typical example of copyright infringement.

Saying goodbye to this hardship in image world, Pixabay has come up with 1.3 million+ royalty-free images, which are free to use for public display, without violating one's copyright.

I was little scared of writing this Pixabay review cause I did not know whether the images available on Pixabay are original or not. After reading the Pixabay FAQs, I came to know that all the images on Pixabay are original i.e. They were not previously used.

So, I tried to write a short review of Pixabay on my blog as a credit to some of the images' background used in the blog posts. I am not still an experienced user on Pixabay so this post may not include all the features and services served by Pixabay. I will try to add more words after I get full information about it.

Method of use

Images on the Pixabay are provided under Creative Commons CC0, that is, under that law, no any attributions or backlinks are needed to use those images on website or blog. The owner of the image on Pixabay has handed over their copyrights and related or neighboring rights to these Images and Videos.

All the images on Pixabay can be used originally or can be further modified so as to fit the blog or website design. You can use Photoshop or other image editing software to fit images to your style.

Can I use Pixabay for commercial purpose? Yes, You heard it right. The images available on Pixabay are free for commercial use. You will not be facing a lawsuit or any other legal issues.

Whether you are creating banners for blog posts, doing social media marketing or creating an animated video for Youtube, Pixabay has got you covered.

Pixabay doesn't allow website owners to hotlink their images as of until today. So, you have to download the image and again upload it to your server. If you are on WordPress, you can directly search and use Pixabay images from within your site using the official Plugin (going to be discussed below). On the contrary, if you are on other platforms, downloading and uploading is only the option.

Downloading images from Pixabay is pretty straightforward. You can simply click on the desired image, choose the dimensions and download it to your computer or mobile devices.

Website Look And Feel

Talking about the website look, Pixabay has the clean and responsive interface with a powerful search option on the top navigation along with powerful filters. Search results can be even more personalized by applying the filters. Filters include media type, orientation, category, larger than and color. Media type denotes photos, vector graphics, illustrations, and videos.

You can also customize your search results by applying horizontal or vertical orientation. There are several categories to pick the images from. You can apply it to get more precise results.

Another best filter option available is 'Larger than' where you can insert height and width of the image so that images displayed on search results are of larger dimensions than inserted dimensions. Similarly, color option helps to filter the images of different colors.
You may look at the following screenshot to know more about filters and search results:

I am little ruined with the website search bar because the search bar on the website is not fixed/floating. Searching the website would be even better if the search bar was fixed on the top so it would not be necessary to scroll to top in order to search new images.

Finding and downloading high-quality free images in the smartphone is much more simplified with the Pixabay official app for Androids and iOS. Despite their higher file size, apps did pretty well with no frequent lagging and without heating up my device during my usage.

Images and Videos

All the images available in Pixabay are in HD quality, however, registration is required to download the full dimension image. I think the maximum sized image available without registration is sufficient for normal blogging use. If you want to, you can simply sign up to Pixabay.

But the annoying thing that non-registered users get is reRECAPTCHA before downloading each image. Although the reCAPTCHA can protect Pixabay from spams and abuse, it seems to have negative effects on real users. This can simply be solved by signing in to Pixabay with Google+, Facebook or email address.

After signing in, the preferred image uploader can be followed to get future notifications from him/her.

Wondering what's the 'coffee button' beside the author avatar in each photo page? Well, this is a button which allows users to donate owner to buy them a cup of coffee. Good, not?

Not only images but also the high-quality vector graphics, illustrations, and videos can be downloaded from Pixabay. Most of the vectors, illustrations, and videos I found on Pixabay were truly appealing and astonishing - The reason why I was compelled to write this review.

Although Pixabay is best known for royalty free images' site, it didn't fail to surprise me in the video depart too. Thanks to those hard workers who have provided us clean and surprising videos at no cost.

Pixabay Plugin for WordPress

Using free images on WordPress sites has been made easier and faster. Pixabay provides a free "Pixabay WordPress Plugin" that can be integrated with your WordPress blog or website to search over one million quality public domain images available on Pixabay.

If you are on WordPress, it will not be necessary for you to download the images and again upload them to your Wordpress Blog or Website. This free plugin enables you to search the images, filter and direct upload images to WordPress library. You can download Pixabay WordPress Plugin directly using this link (Official) and upload it to WordPress.

Pixabay for Photoshop and Office

If you are design-enthusiast or a Photoshop expert then, here is good news for you. Pixabay has released official Photoshop extension. By using this extension, you will be able to search and to use Pixabay images directly from within Photoshop application. You can download Pixabay Photoshop extension using this link.

In addition to Photoshop extension, Pixabay has also released Pixabay add-in for Microsoft Office. This add-in will also allow you to search and use free images in Microsoft Words and Powerpoint with no cost at all. You can download Pixabay Office Add-in using this link.

Pixabay Ads

Pixabay uses ads on its website. All of the ads I noticed while browsing Pixabay were contextual, that is, all the ads were related to the content of the Pixabay website (Mainly about other free or paid image sites). So I did not feel those ads annoying and ruining.

However, Ads may disturb us sometime. To get rid of ads, you can upload your own images to Pixabay giving the rights to use it publicly. After uploading at least ten images, Pixabay provides an ad-free environment to its user.

Summary

All in all, after this Pixabay review, we can draw a conclusion that the Pixabay is a safe, legal and free site to find great images and videos for blogging, YouTubing, graphic designing, marketing, and any other personal or commercial purpose.

No matter how narrower your niche is, there is still someone in Pixabay who provides you with the fulfillment of your image or video needs for that niche.

Only thing I suggest you do is: Give Pixabay a try! And, get amazed by royalty free images without having to get copyright complaints or legal issues.
